May 1: Biggest subsidy goes聽to private cars

Re: 鈥淧ublic transit should be free, Victoria council says,鈥 April 26. I agree with recent letter-writers that governments shouldn鈥檛 subsidize people鈥檚 transportation choices.

May 1: Horgan throws bone to the taxpayers

Re: 鈥淗organ passes on free transit,鈥 April 27. I would be the last guy to high-five an NDP鈥檈r, but how about that NDP premier telling the other NDP鈥檈rs on Victoria city council: 鈥淚f you want to provide free bus transportation, you pay for it.

May 1: Rail system better than free buses

Re: 鈥淧ublic transit should be free, Victoria council says,鈥 April 26. How many commuters would choose to sit in traffic on a crowded bus for free rather than in their own car? Free transit will not solve anything.

May 1: Better bus service before lower fares

Re: 鈥淧ublic transit should be free, Victoria council says,鈥 April 26. I would be happy to pay my current fare (a $45 seniors鈥 monthly pass) for more frequent service 鈥 ideally every 15 minutes on all routes.

May 1: Horgan backs highways, not transit

Re: 鈥淗organ passes on free transit,鈥 April 27. Premier John Horgan claims to support better public transit and more affordable fares as a way to reduce climate pollution, but his actions tell a different story.

May 1: Hatred toward Alberta accomplished nothing

Re: 鈥淜enney could stop a possible war,鈥 letter, April 28. I have to ask why the Times 91原创 would publish that letter.

May 1: Forest practices hurt Cowichan River water

Re: 鈥淐ommunity is ready to solve Cowichan River problems,鈥 comment, April 28. Parker Jefferson wrote in this commentary that the solution to the reduced water flow in the Cowichan River is to increase height of the weir at Lake Cowichan.

May 1: Municipal tax hikes are unsustainable

Re: 鈥淧ublic transit should be free, Victoria council says,鈥 April 26. There has been much discussion in recent days of free transit in our region and a suggestion that current fare-box revenues could simply be transferred to local property taxpayers.

Tuesday letters: April 30

Pay for your own transportation choice Re: 鈥淧ublic transit should be free, Victoria council says,鈥 April 26. Here we go again with another hare-brained proposal from Victoria city council 鈥 free public transit for the entire capital region.

April 28: Canada fails in duty on climate change

Re: 鈥淜enney plans strategy, not revenge,鈥 letter, April 24. The letter-writer suggests most people in B.C. support bitumen pipelines, which I doubt. Most people I know see climate change and expansion of bitumen pipelines as serious challenges.
