The B.C. education ministry is planning a fundamental change in the way children are taught. Schools devote too much time to facts and figures, the ministry believes, and not enough to "big ideas.

Re: "B.C. pipeline review needed to restore legal powers," Aug. 31. The proposed Northern Gateway pipeline debate prompts increasing rhetoric. Former law professor Murray Rankin is now an adviser to NDP leader Adrian Dix.

Re: "Hunting is ethical way to control deer," Sept. 4. When a cougar chases down and sinks its teeth into a deer, it is not an inhumane cull but survival.

Re: "Off you go, soldier," Sept. 4. In 2008, Prime Minister Stephen Harper finally admitted during the election that the Iraq war was "absolutely an error" - on national television, no less.

Re: "If horses could speak, what would they say?" Sept. 5. As someone with a lifelong love of horses, I have to respond to the letter about how Ontario racehorses will be destroyed by their owners if the Ontario racing industry collapses.

Re: "CRD looks to province for deer help," Sept. 6. Having looked at the recommendations from the deer advisory group, I see little or no relief for urban homeowners in the Capital Regional District.

Premier Christy Clark said her cabinet shuffle this week was a "renewal." But in one respect, it looks much like politics as usual, with titles and, in many cases, extra pay for MLAs willing to seek re-election next May.

I am writing in regard to the traffic light at McKenzie Avenue and Nelthorpe Street in Saanich. This is a dangerous intersection, as drivers frequently run the red light on McKenzie.

September opened in fine form last weekend, with a great deal of sunshine, warm (but not sweltering) temperatures and another successful round at the annual Saanich Fair.
