Victoria police trying to identify restaurant puncher

Incident occurred after staff stopped serving the man when he began to show signs of impairment, and he became verbally abusive, and ended up punching a customer who stepped in.

Victoria police are trying to identify a man who punched a fellow customer in the face at a Bastion Square restaurant on Monday night.

Police were told staff stopped serving the man around 8:30 p.m. when he began to show signs of impairment by drugs or alcohol. After the man became verbally abusive to staff, another customer came forward to support staff and asked the man to leave.

The impaired man threatened the other customer with a chair. A second customer stepped in and took the chair away, police said.

Without warning, the assailant struck the first customer in the face, then damaged an umbrella and left the restaurant.

The victim suffered facial and dental injuries.

The assailant is about 35, six-foot-one, with a slim build. He has short brown hair, shaved to stubble on the sides and back, and longer on top.

He was wearing a black bomber jacket, dark pants and dark shoes, and was carrying a black backpack and a black bag with red piping.
