Wind warnings issued for parts of 91原创 Island as storm approaches

Strong winds are expected on Island鈥檚 north and east coasts, and in Greater Victoria.

Environment Canada is warning of strong winds sweeping across 91原创 Island as a storm system approaches from the west.

On the North Island, wind speeds could go up to 120 kilometres an hour causing damage to roof shingles and windows, the issued shortly after 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Motorists driving tall vehicles are asked to take care driving on highways with strong cross winds, it said.

A warning was also in place for East 91原创 Island from Nanoose Bay to Campbell River.

In Greater Victoria, the weather agency issued a special weather statement warning of “strong and gusty” winds for the capital region and the Southern Gulf Islands.

Environment Canada also told area residents to expect potential power outages caused by downed trees and falling tree branches.

As of 2 p.m. Sunday, almost 3,600 in Port Hardy, Campbell River, Qualicum Beach and Tofino, with two of the outages caused by downed trees on power lines. The other two were still under investigation.

Last weekend, a storm cut power to more than 300,000 B.C. Hydro customers in the province, including about 17,000 on 91原创 Island and the Gulf Islands.
