Three COVID deaths reported in Island Health, five outbreaks declared over

Five COVID-19 outbreaks at seniors’ care homes in Island Health have been declared over, while two more have been announced.

Five COVID-19 outbreaks at seniors’ care homes in Island Health have been declared over, while two more have been announced.

Outbreaks have been declared over at Nanaimo Seniors Village, Cowichan District Hospital, The Gardens at Qualicum Beach, Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence and Echo Village.

The new outbreaks are at Wexford Creek assisted living in Nanaimo and Sidney Care Home.

As of Thursday, there had been four residents cases at Wexford Creek, according to Island Health. Three residents at Sidney Care Home had tested positive for the coronavirus.

There are 46 health-care facilities in the province with ongoing outbreaks, most of them seniors’ care homes. Half of them are in the Island Health region.

The Health Ministry said in a statement released Friday that there have been another 17 deaths linked to COVID-19 in the province, for a total of 2,747 fatalities.

Three of the deaths were in the Island Health region, which has now had 200 deaths linked to COVID-19. A total of 190 new confirmed cases were reported Friday in the health authority.

The hospitalization rate continues to drop, sitting at 846 on Friday compared with 946 a week earlier, while 136 people were in intensive care.

More than 90 per cent of those eligible 12 and over have received two shots, while 51.5 per cent have had their third dose.

In the two weeks ending Feb. 9, 27 per cent of the people with COVID-19 in hospitals have not been vaccinated, while almost 69 per cent in hospital have had their shots.
