Five new COVID deaths in Island Health over long weekend; Nanaimo hospital outbreak over

B.C. reported 2,103 new cases of COVID-19 over the Family Day long weekend, including 337 in Island Health.

During the period from Friday to Monday, there were also 44 new deaths, including five in Island Health, for an overall total of 2,830.

On Tuesday, the province reported 688 individuals in hospital with COVID-19, including 108 in intensive care. In the Island Health region, 68 people were in hospital, nine of whom were in intensive care.

That’s down from last Tuesday, when B.C. reported 787 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 82 in Island Health, of whom 14 were in intensive care.

No new outbreaks were declared in long-term care homes in Island Health, but three were deemed over, along with outbreaks on the fourth and fifth floors of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Remaining outbreaks in Island Health include: Wexford Creek, Sidney Care Home, Eden Gardens, Kiwanis Village Lodge, Salvation Army Sunset Lodge, Sunset Lodge, Amica on the Gorge, Chemainus Health Care Centre, Selkirk Seniors Village, Sunridge Place, Nanaimo Seniors Village, Sluggett House, Glacier View Lodge, Rest Haven Lodge, Sidney All Care and The Heights at Mt. View.

As of Tuesday, 90.6 per cent of British Columbians age 12 and older had received two doses of vaccine and 54.9 per cent had received a booster.
