Cougar calls on Sooke family

Rod Bealing tries to make his unwanted visitors feel unwelcome.

And he did so when a cougar visited his backyard near East Sooke Park this week.

Bealing's dog Buzz, a nine-year-old border collie and lab cross, chased the cougar up the tree, where it sat for a couple of hours before falling about six metres and moving on.

"I wanted it to be inconvenienced," said Bealing. "I wanted it to have a negative experience."

But that was not because he wants to see the animal hurt.

The father of three loves his two-hectare property, where he keeps chickens and ducks, because he gets to see wildlife.

"But we want to live with it. We don't want to shoot something every time we see it," Bealing said.
