A Langford man accused of killing his mother in 2021 appeared in B.C. Supreme Court Thursday as his trial, which was expected to start this week, was put off to early next year.

Ryan Robert Elder is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 59-year-old Raymonde Elder.

She was found dead in her Selwyn Road home at Arbutus Ridge Estates mobile home park on New Year’s Eve in 2021, after police conducted a wellness check requested by her brother when she did not show up for work.

Elder, who lived with his mother, had struggled with mental-health issues.

On Thursday, Elder opted to be tried by a judge alone, instead of a judge and jury.

He will remain in custody until his trial, which is scheduled to begin on Jan. 13, 2025.
