City architect passionate about heritage buildings

Nicholas Bawlf, who has died at age 74, was one of the first practitioners of heritage preservation in British Columbia, and brought his style to such projects as Victoria's Market Square in the 1970s and the design of the Victoria Conference Centre.

Nicholas Bawlf, who has died at age 74, was one of the first practitioners of heritage preservation in British Columbia, and brought his style to such projects as Victoria's Market Square in the 1970s and the design of the Victoria Conference Centre.

His doctoral thesis, which looked at the rejuvenation of Bastion Square, won the Pilkington Scholarship, which took him to London, England, Denmark and Ireland for architectural studies.

"He's helped preserve what's unique about Victoria," Mayor Dean Fortin said. "He will be missed and I will personally miss his laugh." Obituary, page A2.
