One of the last family-friendly restaurants in Esquimalt looks like it's closing for good.
A "For Sale" sign has gone up on the premises of Sunnyside Cafe, the all-day breakfast restaurant located on Esquimalt Road, across from the old municipal hall, underneath Action Motorcycles. It's been closed for at least a month due to "personal health reasons" involving an owner, says a note on the door.
For Esquimalt residents, such as myself, this is quite a loss for the community. The Sunnyside Cafe, with its fresh local ingredients and kid-friendly environment, was one of the few options for families in the municipality. Esquimalt has a desperate shortage of good family restaurants, where you can sit down in a nice environment and eat a good meal. It's an issue that has arisen from time to time during municipal election campaigns. But subsequent mayors and councils have been unable to lure such restaurants into the township.
A trip to the Sunnyside Cafe on the weekend would land you among an eclectic mixture of townsfolk - municipal politicians, firefighters, police officers, nearby workers, and people, young and old, from around the community.
I will particularly miss the eggs benedict, which were, in my opinion, the best in all of Greater Victoria.
But what I'll mostly miss is the option to have a weekend breakfast in my own community - something residents of Victoria, Oak Bay, Saanich and other municipalities are able to do all the time.
