With summer well underway, it鈥檚 both worthwhile and gratifying to survey what we鈥檝e accomplished in the garden.

Dear Tony: With the growing heat and climate change many of the owners in our older highrise building are seeking permission to install air conditioners either in windows or as heat pumps with external mounted air circulations systems.

Dear Helen: A few months ago you suggested using row cover over carrots to protect them from carrot fly. Does the carrot fly hang around all summer, or is it safe to remove the row cover now? S.B.

Dear Helen: I鈥檝e been carefully snapping off the young 鈥渟ucker鈥� growth that emerges on my staked tomatoes between the main stem and the leaf stems. Some of these 鈥渟uckers鈥� are like perfect miniature plants. Seems a pity to toss them on the compost.

Dear Tony: Our strata corporation has been hoping to open our gym and our common room to permit council meetings and owner events such as cribbage night on Tuesday and bridge on Thursday.

After being chased out of the garden repeatedly by rain through the first half of the month, I鈥檓 relieved, as a gardener, to see summer settling in. The cool, rainy weather did get cool season vegetables off to a wonderful start though.
