Dear Helen: I鈥檝e been carefully snapping off the young 鈥渟ucker鈥 growth that emerges on my staked tomatoes between the main stem and the leaf stems. Some of these 鈥渟uckers鈥 are like perfect miniature plants. Seems a pity to toss them on the compost.

After being chased out of the garden repeatedly by rain through the first half of the month, I鈥檓 relieved, as a gardener, to see summer settling in. The cool, rainy weather did get cool season vegetables off to a wonderful start though.
