New e-bike share comes to SFU's Burnaby campus with Evo app

Burnaby post-secondary students, are you ready to do the electric ride around SFU?

It's time to zip around campus at Simon Fraser University (SFU).

There's a new e-bike share program at the Burnaby Mountain campus with 30 electric bicycles available to ride at all times.

The program, Evolve, was created by BCAA and operates alongside the Evo Car Share program.

The Evo app will allow people to find the nearest e-bike, book it and ride around campus and the surrounding area.

"I'm thrilled by the addition of e-bikes to our Burnaby campus ahead of the fall semester," said Martin Pochurko, SFU's vice-president of finance and administration.

"I can't wait to see another environmentally friendly way to get across campus."

How does the e-bike share work?

The electric pedal-assist bikes can be found at nine designated parking zones across campus, including outside student residences to the west and adjacent to the UniverCity neighbourhood to the east, according to a news release.

The rides cost 35 cents a minute, or $12.99 per hour and an additional $1.25 unlocking fee per trip.

Frequent riders can subscribe for $9.99 a month.

Each bike comes with a complimentary use of a helmet (if riders don't have one of their own), and the app provides safety information, riding tips and advice.

Using the new e-bikes, students living in residence can ride to a grocery store in three minutes instead of a 15-minute walk, according to the release.

All trips must start and end at an approved Evolve parking zone around campus and stay on bike lanes and designated paved paths.

But don't think you can start doing wheelies at Convocation Mall or the Academic Quadrangle.

Those two areas are off-limits and will be highlighted in red on the Evo app.

The e-bikes' power will be "automatically eliminated when entering these no-riding zones to ensure the safety of all users," the release stated.

This will be BCAA's first campus-based program, said Leanne Buhler, BCAA senior manager, in the same statement.

"This program marks our commitment to both present and future generations, and we're actively seeking more public opportunities across the region to extend this positive impact."
