One-on-one support services for rural businesses and communities affected by changes in the forest sector will be coming to communities across northern B.C., including Prince George.

Northern Development Initiative Trust has approved nine economic development agencies across northern B.C to hire 13 regional business liaisons for a one-year term. The new positions are made possible by $1.5 million in provincial funding, announced in April.

“Rural businesses are deeply connected to their local communities,” Northern Development director of economic development Felicia Magee said in a statement issued Tuesday. “They tend to reinvest their profits locally, sponsor community events, and create partnerships with other businesses and organizations. Through the RBCR program, we can assist businesses and communities, creating a stronger, local economy.”

Community Futures Fraser-Fort George, based in Prince George, received funding for two positions.

Funding was also provided to Community Futures offices located in Quesnel, Houston, Williams Lake, Dawson Creek, Prince Rupert and Ashcroft. The District of Fort St. James and First Nations Business Development Association also received funding for positions.

“Preparation for long-term stability and resistance to disruptive events and subsequent recessions depends on economic diversification,” Community Futures Nadina (Houston) executive director Kim Martinson said. “The Regional Business Liaison positions will assist our communities in developing strategies to deal with the ever-changing economic environment and will support individuals, businesses, Indigenous-owned businesses and non-profits that require business start-up/expansion, mitigation, recovery, transitioning and general support.”
