I am a frequent visitor to Victoria from Montreal. This subject is of particular interest to me because
Montreal is discontinuing our horse-drawn carriages.
Some people there feel the horses are being abused. (Having to work in the heat, traffic concerns, inadequate stabling etc.).
In contrast, the horses in Victoria are extremely well-managed. I have visited a farm in Saanich that is home to the horses and was impressed with the way they are trained and looked after, even after they have been retired.
I feel that these horses are an iconic part of the Victorian landscape, and a joyful way for tourists to see the city.
These horses are bred for this work and love what they do. It would be a sad loss to see them go.
