Licence-plate data shouldn't be kept

Re: "Police chief backs licence tracking," Aug. 2

Jamie Graham, Victoria's police chief, would have us believe that we live in a world where we can trust the police to always do what is right. In this world, information about citizens is never abused, and databanks are completely secure. In this fanciful world, unicorns and rainbows abound.

In the real world, compiling and keeping huge amounts of data about when and where vehicles are seen by police cameras is rightly perceived as worrying. If the best argument Graham can come up with is "trust us," the sensible response is "no."

Unless Graham and the RCMP can come up with some truly convincing arguments I can see no reason to allow licence plate data to be kept.
