Re: “Victoria mayor throws down the Heidelberg Challenge,” comment, June 1.
I join you in the Heidelberg Challenge, Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, but I won’t be ditching my car quite yet.
I had an opportunity to do so last month but letting go of our cars is not easy. It is a huge adjustment, at least it is for me.
I have tried unsuccessfully to get out of my car for the last number of years. I drive a 1995 Toyota Tercel. It’s a good car. It has been well taken care of over the years, first by my mother and then me.
Last month, it was going to cost $3,000 for repairs.
Is now the time, I wondered? Do I get rid of my car and walk, bus, bike? It took me two weeks to think about it and I finally decided to keep my car.
I am not ready to let go completely quite yet.
However, my commitment to myself is to start using the bus more often, get used to riding my bike in poor weather and at night and walk more. Slow, but sure. It is going to require a lot of self-discipline to change my habit of jumping into my car at every whim. It’s a challenge. So here’s to the Heidelberg Challenge, Mayor Helps.
