Re: "Central Saanich has low-income housing," Aug. 16.
"Low income" is anyone living on social assistance, or persons with disabilities without a supplemented income.
"Low income" means poor or in threat of homelessness. It can also mean hungry, as individuals can have a five-week wait for the next assistance cheque.
Not every person who is homeless is a drug user or alcoholic or suffers from mental illness. Yet almost all people in this precarious situation are being marginalized and discriminated against daily.
The discrimination stems from the application process. It is time to bring property-management firms and nonprofit organizations to task by outing their discriminatory applications and their discriminatory interview practices.
The Human Rights Act clearly states "a person must not deny to a person or a class of persons the right to occupy, as a tenant, space that is represented as being available for occupancy by a tenant."
It is against the act to discriminate against a person with a disability.
