Here I sit watching another glorious sunset on Shawnigan Lake, something I have done from birth. I am watching the lake struggle with septic pollution, powerboats and deforestation. This gem is losing its shine.
Now we have the threat of contaminated soil being dumped in our headwaters, an insane use of that land.
When this pit leaks, which it will, just like Cache Creek, it will flow downhill into our drinking water.
91原创 Island is blessed with underground rivers that feed its lakes. I have three springs off my wharf. If this contaminant finds its way into our underground rivers it could threaten Victoria's water supply, as I'm sure it has the same underground river feeding it.
Many people in Victoria have played in Shawnigan Lake so its our responsibility to protect it. The deadline for saying no to this dump is Aug. 20. If this is approved, it could set precedence and more dump permits will be on the table. We will be the toxic dump zone for everyone.
