Confusing intersection just plain dangerous

There may be good reasons to ban tour buses and other vehicles in our old town, but Monday's fatal accident at the corners of Humboldt, Douglas and Cormorant streets is not one of them.

This three-street intersection is very confusing. The last time I drove through it, westbound on Humboldt, a taxicab emerging from Cormorant to my right crossed in front of me and turned left onto Douglas, doubtless heading for the taxi stand at the bus depot.

At the same time, some tourists who had started north across Humboldt saw I was coming and retreated to the curb.

And yet, I insist, I had the green light - or, at least, there was a green light.

My previous experience came only a few weeks before. I was part of a group of cyclists on an architectural tour. Four or five us arrived together at the same intersection from the same direction on Humboldt. When we got there, two of us, seeing a green light, pedalled blithely on through while the rest stopped for the red that we saw.

It's just plain dangerous.
