Re: “B.C. schools to provide free tampons, pads,” April 6.
When I read that the provincial government is providing $300,000 as startup money, stating that: “We don’t want any young people having to go without,” my head shook. What about our seniors who struggle financially and find it difficult to purchase products for their bladder or bowel leakage?
I am not being facetious. As an RN, I teach seniors in the community about issues facing older adults and know that this is a need. I am aware that Soap for Hope has hygiene products for seniors, yet due to compromised mobility issues or inability to drive, obtaining supplies is a challenge.
If our government can find $300,000 to assist young people, why can it not supply funding for those seniors who are facing poverty challenges, as well? These supplies could be in senior centres or health clinics and provided when there is a genuine need. This is no time for ageism.
