Re: “B.C. schools to provide free tampons, pads,” April 6.
Bravo to the B.C. government for taking the curse out of menstruation for our young women students.
Let’s hope the government moves to support all menstruating women in need. This is truly a health issue, as the federal government acknowledged when it abolished the GST on menstrual products in 2015.
For many months, a local advocacy group, Grandmothers Speak Out, has been buying pads and tampons for grateful women in shelters and transition programs. Clients have told us of their “make-do” solutions — wads of tissue, folded-up socks, etc. — bringing obvious health hazards. We have asked a major drugstore chain to offer a free dispensary to women in need, as is being pioneered in Toronto.
But how much better if all women who need them could simply be assured of getting free menstrual supplies through community agencies?
