April 21: Alberta election a lesson in civics

Re: “Kenney, UCP romp to majority,” April 17.

Did we really think generations of Cold War conditioning wouldn’t win out in Alberta’s election? We have to recognize the Cold War’s influence on our politics and the way to do it is a real civics education.

Civics classes could have taught us as voters how tribal attitudes affect problem-solving. If we don’t like the other guys, we don’t want to give them credit. This doesn’t solve issues.

Generations of North Americans grew up hearing “socialism is evil” and distrusting the left. That same attitude is preventing people from accepting issues such as climate change or how to help the poor.

We have a culture raised on partisan games.

This inability to problem-solve is poisonous to our and our kids’ future. Civics is group problem-solving. We voters need these skills as much as the leaders we elect do. We need our school boards to double down on civics education.
