SAINT JOHN, N.B. - A city councillor in Saint John, N.B., who is facing child pornography and sexual touching charges will spend at least another week behind bars after his bail hearing was delayed Monday.

The defence for Donnie Snook told provincial court he needed more time to review the case before the hearing was adjourned until next Monday.

Snook was led by sheriff officers into a packed courtroom that included some of his friends. He occasionally glanced at the police officers and the nearly 70 people who had filled the courtroom during the proceedings.

Rosa Turner, a former neighbour of Snook's, said she was surprised when she heard of the charges but will continue to support him.

"He's still my friend and I'll never shun him or walk away from him," she said outside court.

"Anything I could do for Donnie, I would do, and help him."

Snook, 40, was arrested at his home last Wednesday as part of an investigation that began in 2011 involving the RCMP as well as Saint John and Toronto police.

Investigators said they seized computer equipment and images after carrying out a search warrant at Snook's home in the city's east end.

The charges against him include sexual interference with a child under 16, possession of child pornography and making child pornography.

Snook was first elected as city councillor in 2008. He is involved in community organizations and was the executive director of the Inner City Youth Ministry for 14 years. The ministry provides sports programs, mentoring, and lunches at three local schools.

He has been suspended with pay from that job.
