A woman bit an RCMP officer in the arm while running away from a drunk driving investigation in Langford, police say.
West Shore RCMP officers responded to a report of an impaired driver near the intersection of Merchant Way and Kelly Road shortly after midnight Friday morning.
The woman was seen consuming a large amount of liquor before driving away in a 2008 Hyundai Accent, police were told.
Officers caught up with the driver about 1.5 kilometres away, near the 2700-block of Jacklin Road, where Ruth King Elementary is located.
Cpl. Nancy Saggar of West Shore RCMP said the woman was belligerent and ran away when officers told her that she was being investigated for impaired driving.
“A brief foot chase and physical struggle occurred in which the woman bit the officer’s arm,” she said in a statement.
The suspect was arrested for impaired driving, assault of a police officer and resisting arrest.
The 24-year-old woman attended court Friday and was charged with four offences, including impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample, obstructing a police officer by resisting arrest, and assault of a police officer.
The suspect has since been released from custody and is expected to appear in court in the coming weeks, Saggar said.
The officer who was bitten received minor injuries and is expected to fully recover, she said.
