Island Health has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Victoria General Hospital after two patients tested positive.

The outbreak is limited to the two rooms on the general medicine unit on 4B. “This is likely where transmission occurred,” the health authority said in a news release.

Island Health said it has implemented precautions, including isolation, enhanced cleaning, and contact tracing.

Only essential visits will be allowed to the affected rooms.

No other areas of the hospital are currently affected, the statement said. “The hospital is still a safe place and people should not avoid seeking emergency care if they require it.”

All outpatient services and scheduled procedures are planned to continue as normal.

The province reported 3,795 new COVID-19 cases Friday, almost 600 fewer than the previous day, but still higher than any other day since the start of the pandemic. Island Health reported 434 new cases on Friday.

There are now 20,811 known active cases in the province, of which 2,336 are on the Island.
