Oct. 12, 1949: Council divided over second radio station; Stories from our pages over the last 150 years.

City Council on Tuesday reaffirmed its support of the application to the C.B.C. Board of Governors by Mr. David Armstrong for a license to operate a second radio station in Victoria.

The support was given despite vigorous objection by M.V. Chesnut, manager of the existing broadcasting station. The council heard briefs from both Mr. Chesnut and Mr. Armstrong, then voted on a motion of Ald. Ed Williams that the move for a second station be supported again.

The motion passed six to four, Mayor Percy George, Ald. J.D. Hunter, Ald. Margaret Christie and Ald. Frank Mulliner dissenting.

Council supported a similar application of Mr. Armstrong earlier in the year which the C.B.C. governors turned down.

The former Victoria man, now an official with a New Westminster radio station, told council he felt optimistic that the governors would grant him a license this time.

His proposed station would have 250 watts of power.
