Portion of Campbell River high school deemed safe for use after fire

Some students will have to temporarily attend classes at the former Oyster River school.

A portion of Campbell River’s Carihi Secondary has been seemed safe for use on Monday, after a fire shut the school down for over a week.

The Campbell River School District confirmed the move in a statement on its website, citing independent air-quality testing that has now been completed.

School staff returned to the school on Friday to prepare for students’ return.

Repairs could take up to two months, with most of the fire’s impact in the school’s A-wing — which houses several classrooms, the gym, the stage and the teaching kitchen, where the fire may have begun.

The B-wing was also affected, sustaining smoke and water damage.

The fire left about 30 per cent of the school’s 922 students without a classroom, and the district’s former Oyster River school will be the main satellite facility for temporary classroom space.

It’s hoped the Oyster River site will only be needed for the three weeks leading into the Christmas break, the district said.

A bus will be used to transfer students between Carihi and Oyster River.

Some classes will also take place at École des Deux Mondes Elementary, and gym classes will be at Robron Centre.
