Victoria police chased a speeding car around the city early yesterday morning after the driver took off as he was about to be arrested for picking up a prostitute.

Police spotted a black Honda on Rock Bay Avenue around

3:15 a.m. and a street worker about to get in the passenger seat, said police spokesman Sgt. Grant Hamilton. As a police cruiser approached the car, the man sped away, driving down Hillside Avenue at 100 kilometres an hour and blowing red lights at both Government Street and Blanshard Street, he said.

Police lost the car as it turned south onto Cook Street.

Officers found the vehicle abandoned at a dead end on Blackwood Street and called in a police dog to help find the man.

The police dog Pago and handler Const. Sue McLeod eventually found the 30-year-old man hiding behind a fence near 91原创 and Caledonia, just a block away from the Victoria police station.

No charges have been laid and alcohol does not appear to be a factor, Hamilton said.
