Novice driver clocked at double the speed limit, rear-ends car

When a police officer activated emergency lights and siren, the driver ran into the back of a vehicle that had responded by pulling over

A novice driver in a pickup rear-ended another vehicle Thursday night after being clocked by West Shore RCMP doing twice the speed limit.

A traffic-unit officer was conducting speed enforcement on the Island Highway when the driver was found to be going 100 kilometres per hour in a 50 km/h zone near the border of Colwood and View Royal.

When the officer activated emergency lights and siren, the pickup truck ran into the back of a vehicle that had responded by pulling over.

The truck driver gave a breath sample of .05 — below the legal limit but an issue because novice drivers can’t have any alcohol in their system.

The driver received a $368 ticket for excessive speed, a $109 ticket for disobeying the alcohol restriction, a 12-hour driving suspension and seven-day impoundment of the truck.
