Nanaimo Museum to begin staged reopening

The Nanaimo Museum is beginning a staged reopening this week.

The Nanaimo Museum begins its staged reopening on Thursday with modified hours and is asking all visitors to wear masks.

Entry to the gallery will be by timed admission only during pre-determined time slots. People can register online for a self-guided visit. Groups of more than four people are asked to call the museum at 250-753-1821. Admission is limited, and entry will be free until Sept. 18.

This week, the museum will be open Thursday to Sunday, noon to 3 p.m. each day, for the free Bubble Buddies program. Up to six people in the same household or social 鈥渂ubble鈥 can sign up for 45 minutes one-on-one time with a guide.

The museum will be closed to general admission during Bubble Buddies and only other participants in the program will be in the gallery.

The gift shop will be open the same hours.

Opening hours will be expanded next week. From June 25 to June 27, the museum and gift shop will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Again, timed admission will be offered and only self-guided tours are available.

Starting July 1, the museum will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon for Bubble Buddies and from 1 to 4 p.m. for self-guided visitors. The gift shop will be open the same hours.

Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the museum, where signs and route markers will help visitors physically distance. Public washrooms will be closed for the time being. Visitors are asked to wear masks.

The historic Bastion building is closed for now. Cannon firings will take place on a new schedule: Fridays and Saturdays and statutory holidays at noon, starting June 26.
