Mounties are reminding people organizing events this summer that public health measures are still in effect, like physical distancing and a ban on gatherings of more than 50 people.

The reminder comes after North Cowichan-Duncan RCMP broke up a party of about 200 people in field near Crofton and Maple Bay last Sunday.

Officers were called out about 10:30听p.m. June 14 to find a large gathering of people playing loud music and drinking alcohol, with a tent and lights set up.

Police said the partygoers were co-operative with ending the event and there were no arrests. RCMP officers issued warnings to those who attended.

鈥淯sually, our messaging for young people going to parties is to ensure you have a safe ride home, and be respectful of neighbours,鈥 North Cowichan Duncan RCMP Cpl. Kiel Pharis said in a statement 鈥淭his year, in addition to those points, we also encourage anyone going to a gathering to continue following physical distancing guidelines.鈥

In Campbell River, RCMP also issued a reminder about physical distancing after officers were called to fights outside a nightclub at closing time last Friday and Saturday.

The fights started while people waited for rides home; ambulances were called in both cases.
