For the first time since April, there is a water route alternative to the Malahat Drive.

The MV Klitsa is scheduled to return to service on the Brentwood Bay-Mill Bay route this morning, with nine sailings in each direction.

B.C. Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall said the corporation cut back its sailings in April when the province amended the Coastal Ferry Service Contract to allow for service reductions due to pandemic-related concern for health and safety and to match demand.

Marshall said the company will continue to follow the directives and guidance provided by the province and Transport Canada.

On the Brentwood Bay-Mill Bay route, that means drivers will be asked to remain in their vehicle for the entire sailing to ensure physical distancing is maintained. All passengers must possess a face mask and wear it while at the terminal or in passenger areas of the vessel.

B.C. Ferries is recommending customers pay with a card and use tap when possible, though prepaid tickets are also accepted.

The Klitsa accommodates approximately 19 vehicles, and last June carried 29,000 vehicles and 57,000 passengers.
