A Victoria man is facing charges of attempted murder, unlawful confinement, extortion and other serious offences after he allegedly tried to attack two people in an apartment suite, forcing one terrified woman to jump out the window.
Victoria police allege that on Saturday morning, a man broke into a second-storey apartment suite at 1399 Stanley Ave. and confronted the 42-year-old man and 46-year-old woman inside.
The intruder knew the couple and demanded money he said he was owed, said police spokesman Mike Tucker.
The man produced a large kitchen knife and threatened to kill the pair, Tucker said. He cornered the couple in a bedroom and the female victim was so terrified, she jumped out the second-storey window, breaking her leg.
A neighbour called 911 while the intruder fled. He was arrested later in a vehicle stop.
The woman was taken to hospital for the injuries related to the fall.
"There were no injuries sustained during the bedroom encounter," Tucker said. "As far as I know, no one was stabbed."
Jason Aran Martin, 37, was held in police custody after a telebail in front of a justice of the peace in relation to eight charges: attempted murder, break and enter, robbery, two counts of uttering threats, two counts of unlawful confinement and extortion.
Martin appeared in court Monday and was remanded into custody until a court date on Aug. 8.
However, spokesman Neil MacKenzie said Crown counsel has yet to approve the charges, which could change.
