Victoria police say the man tried to flee when officers approached to speak with him, but was arrested after a short foot chase.

An Abbotsford man is facing 85 criminal charges after being arrested Saturday running away from a Victoria car dealership.

Police were called to the dealership in the 3000-block of Douglas Street by an employee who became suspicious when a customer applied for more than $50,000 in financing “using what appeared to be fraudulent means.”

Victoria police were at the dealership when the customer returned. The man tried to flee when officers approached to speak with him. He was arrested after a short foot chase.

Officers searching the man found a number of different identity documents. He refused to identify himself and was transported to cells at the Victoria Police Department. They discovered he is wanted on warrants by four police departments in the province.

Officers learned the man is bound by 79 court-ordered conditions mainly related to fraud and identify theft. He is prohibited from possessing identity documents and from possessing drugs and alcohol. He was also required to live in Abbotsford.

The officers learned that the man was staying at a local hotel using a false identity and a fraudulent credit card.

The man was held in custody on his numerous warrants. He faces 85 total recommended charges, including charges for identity theft, procuring and trafficking government documents, fraud over $5,000, obstruction of a police officer and 79 breaches of various court-ordered conditions.
