It wasn’t the proverbial cat-in-a-tree rescue, but Victoria firefighters stepped in and got a cat and six two-week-old kittens out of a smoky residence on Thursday morning.
A crew from D Platoon responded about 7:30 a.m. to a unit on Humboldt Street and arrived to find smoke billowing from inside, the Victoria firefighters’ union said in a post on social media.
During a check for hot spots after the fire was extinguished, a firefighter discovered a cat that was overwhelmed by the lingering smoke and took it outside to give it oxygen.
As the cat was recovering, a resident of the unit told her that there were still kittens in the smoke-filled suite.
The kittens were found huddled together in a closet.
”The kittens were gently placed into a helmet and brought outside to safety,” the post said. “At this point, all animals, including the mother cat and her kittens, appear to be doing well.”
