A black bear that had been prowling some Saanich Peninsula neighbourhoods over the weekend has been tranquilized and relocated.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service tranquilized the three-year-old male bear near Braun Court in Sidney on Monday.

It was determined to be healthy and moved to an unidentified location away from people.

Sidney RCMP had been monitoring the bear over the weekend and notified schools. The Saanich School District kept students inside at Sidney Elementary and North Saanich Middle School for part of Monday morning.

The province says if you encounter a bear, keep calm, move away from the animal and keep pets close.
