(Cineplex Odeon) Cary Fukunaga directs this update on the Charlotte Bronte classic with a steady hand and an unflinching eye. Steering clear of melodrama to deliver a relatively matter-of-fact story of Victorian survival, the director lets the plot do all the heavy dramatic lifting while the actors are left to keep things minimal and authentic. A refreshing change from the musty bodice rippers of the past, this Jane Eyre pays homage to Bronte's heroine and her unflagging strength in the face of adversity. -Katherine Monk. G

(Empire Capitol 6) Though Matthew McConaughey is usually the actor's equivalent of a Speedo swimsuit, the natural slime factor works in his favour in this legal thriller, as he plays an attorney who works from the back of a car. Cocky and arrogant, McConaughey's character thinks he's got it all under control until a smarter, richer and truly amoral villain enters the frame. The ideas are big, but director Brad Furman lacked the skills to make this more than a mediocre thriller, despite Marisa Tomei and William H. Macy's stellar turns in small roles. -Katherine Monk. 14A

A very funny script and a subversive sensibility help this Greg Mottola movie feel like more than a send-up, or a remake of Superbad with accents. The film has a quiet human charm that rekindles memories of E.T. -Katherine Monk. 14A

(SilverCity) AnnaSophia Robb stars as Bethany Hamilton, a real-life surfer who lost an arm in a shark attack, but who prevailed because of her belief in God. Church and Bible play an unusually large role for a Hollywood movie -it's family fare for the faith-based community -and while it's well made, any sense of drama is smoothed away. -Jay Stone.
