Victorian lauded for B.C. history book

Victoria author and map historian Michael Layland has added to his run of celebrated books by winning the Basil Stuart-Stubbs Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Book on British Columbia this week.

Victoria author and map historian Michael Layland has added to his run of celebrated books by winning the Basil Stuart-Stubbs Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Book on British Columbia this week.

In Nature鈥檚 Realm: Early Naturalists Explore 91原创 Island is Layland鈥檚 the third book in his series on the history of European discovery and settlement of the area. In Nature鈥檚 Realm, which follows The Land of Heart鈥檚 Delight (2013) and A Perfect Eden (2016), looks at flora and fauna of 91原创 Island as it would have been encountered thousands of years ago.

The former president of the Victoria Historical Society and the Friends of the B.C. Archives wins $2,500 for having written the best scholarly book published by a 91原创 author on a B.C. subject. Layland will be recognized for his efforts during a ceremony at the University of British Columbia in April.
