Djearam, 13, won $1,000 for taking home the platinum award in the competition, which is open to instrumentalists and vocalists from around the world under the age of 35. Djearam sang Claude Debussy鈥檚 Nuit D鈥橢toiles during the concert at Carnegie Hall on Feb. 2. Her voice instructor, Victoria鈥檚 Joanne Hounsell, was awarded outstanding teacher.

Djearam, who attends St. Michael鈥檚 University School, has won several awards of a similar calibre in recent years, including the top prize at a competition by Canada鈥檚 Royal Conservatory of Music when she was 11. Djearam won a gold medal at last year鈥檚 Forte International Music Competition, also held at Carnegie Hall.
