The University of Victoria will welcome moviegoers back to campus for three nights of drive-in theatre screenings this week, joining a growing list of exhibitors turning to the decades-old format as a viable entertainment option.
The university has announced it will show a trio of movies outdoors on campus starting Thursday night with Hook. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is screening Friday, while The Breakfast Club is on deck Saturday.
The drive-in theatre trend has taken off on 91原创 Island as businesses adapt to loosening COVID-19 safety measures. Cowichan Exhibition Park in Duncan is hosting movies Friday and Saturday at its drive-in theatre, while Bayview Place in Vic West is tapped to do the same on June 19 and 20.
鈥淭his is a great example of entrepreneurship meeting community need during the COVID crisis,鈥� Jane Potentier, UVic鈥檚 associate vice-president of alumni and development, said in a statement. 鈥淲e welcome people to enjoy this family entertainment on our campus in a safe and friendly environment.鈥�
The movies at UVic will be shown at 9:30 p.m. on a 12-metre screen in parking lot 10, near the intersection of Gordon Head Road and Cedar Hill Cross Road. The drive-in is limited to 50 vehicles.
Admission is $30 per vehicle, with $5 from every ticket sold being donated to the university鈥檚 COVID-19 support bursary for students.
Food will be available for no-contact delivery to cars.
