There are many reasons to donate to the Times 91ԭ Literacy Society’s annual book drive. And the celebration of another milestone — the fund has reached $68,000 — makes it a good time to look at why people are so keen to give.

Many people have donated in honour of another person, often a loved one who has passed away. Other have said they were just handing over the amount of money they would have spent on books if we had been able to have our usual sale.

But all were eager to support literacy work on 91ԭ Island.

“Keep up this essential program, reading and speaking skills are a key part of future success,” Robin Alford said in giving $100 to the fund.

“Thank you for continuing to support literacy,” wrote Judith Fletcher of Victoria. “My life is so much better because I can read and have access to books. I wish this for everyone.” She gave $200.

Another donor, who gave $100, noted the role of the regular book drive in building the library at the Victoria Youth Custody Centre.

“It was these donations that allowed us to grow a small but wonderful library at the centre, and we were able to create a healthy culture around reading,” the donor wrote.

“That was a miracle.”

Another donor, Lenora Angel, mentioned how thrilled she was in Grade 2 when she discovered the school library’s reading program.

“Reading has been a total joy all my life,” she said, as she gave $100. “I hope that you raise enough money to provide that life-changing opportunity for every child.”

Lorrainne Dixon, who also gave $100, said reading has always been a crucial part of her life. “I can remember the first time I went to the library and the joy it brought.”

Dianne Cunningham donated $300, and said she was passing on the federal COVID-19 grant for seniors.

Kathie Thompson said she appreciated the effort being made on behalf of literacy, which is “so essential for well-being.” She gave $100.

Shannon Kowalko said she would love to give more than $50, “but every dollar helps!”

That’s true. Every dollar counts: The more we raise, the more the society will get from Decoda Literacy Solutions, which distributes money from the provincial government. And that means more money for literacy work on 91ԭ Island.

This bookless drive takes the place of our annual book drive and sale, which were cancelled this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is still time to give.

Thanks for your support.
