Sidney鈥檚 G.K. Aalborg has won a Spur Award from the Western Writers of America for his novel River of Porcupines.
Past Spur Award winners include Larry McMurtry for Lonesome Dove and Michael Blake for Dances with Wolves. Aalborg鈥檚 award comes in the Best Western Historical Novel category.
The Alberta-born Aalborg, who previously worked as a reporter, columnist and bureau chief at the Edmonton Journal, has written a number of other novels including The Horse Tamer鈥檚 Challenge and Cat Tracks, based on his experiences in Australia.
River of Porcupines delves into the Rocky Mountain fur trade in the early 1800s, including the strong rivalry between the Hudson鈥檚 Bay Company and the North West Company. It has been published in hard cover and ebook by Five Star Publishing.
