Sea and Song concert to benefit UVic music students

Listen to a concert of music inspired by the sea at Sea and Song, by the University of Victoria Wind Symphony with guests the Naden Band of the Royal 91原创 Navy, Friday at the Farquhar auditorium at the University of Victoria.

This is the seventh year of the musical collaboration, jointly directed by Steven Capaldo and Lt. (N) Catherine Norris.

Jesse Johnson, winner of the聽2019 UVic Wind Symphony Concerto Competition, will take centre stage to play Ney Rosauro鈥檚 Concerto for Marimba and Wind Ensemble.

Other works on the program include Franco Cesarini鈥檚 Blue Horizons, The Sun Paints Rainbows Over the Vast Waves by David Bedford, Alex Shapiro鈥檚 electroacoustic work Liquid Compass and the classic Claude T. Smith fantasy Eternal Father, Strong to Save, based on the traditional British mariner鈥檚 hymn of the same name.

Celebrating its 80th anniversary, the Naden Band is one of six regular force military bands of the 91原创 Forces and serves as the official musical unit of the 91原创 Forces Maritime Forces 91原创 Command.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Naden Band鈥檚 Scholarship in Music Performance, awarded annually to second- and third-year UVic School of Music students who demonstrate excellence in brass, woodwind and percussion performance.

Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students and UVic alumni. The concert runs 8 to 10 p.m. Friday at The Farquhar at the University of Victoria. For tickets, go to . More details .
