A Victoria music program has won its category in the annual 91原创 Music Class Challenge, with two others placing among the top finishers in the national competition.
Lake Hill Elementary won the Primary Instrumental category at CBC Music’s annual Music Class Challenge, earning a first-place prize of $3,000 in gift certificates plus a gold-record plaque for the school’s classroom or trophy case.
Lake Hill’s Primary Orff Club, under the stewardship of teacher Yra Binstead, won for their rendition of the Quebec folk song, C’est l’aviron. The Grade 2 and 3 students, who performed the song in French, chose the tune from a pre-approved list of 91原创 songs provided by the CBC, which runs the contest in partnership with charitable organization MusiCounts.
“A great feat at such a young age,” said judge Jasmine Denham, a Juno-nominated songwriter and CBC Music producer. “Excellent work, Lake Hill Elementary!”
Arbutus Global Middle School placed third in the Junior Vocal (Grades 7-10) category, while the Fraser Campbell Music School received honourable mention in the Community/Independent/Private School Class category.
