Explore: Spot Prawn and Fiddle Fest, 91原创 Opera's Voices in Nature, 91原创 Coast Guard Day

What's on in Greater Victoria this week: June 8-14

Fiddling with prawns

Prawns, fiddles and rugby are among the offerings at the first annual Spot Prawn and Fiddle Fest being held in James Bay this weekend.

The event, produced by the James Bay Athletic Association, is being held at MacDonald Park (212 Niagara St.) on Sunday and is free to attend. Food and music share top billing, with both a fiddle festival and contest and fresh prawn barbecue included among the highlights. The music is curated by local fiddle icon Daniel Lapp, who has asked more than a dozen elite fiddle talents to perform, including Pierre Schryer, Kendel Carson, and Stephanie Cadman.

Rugby exhibitions and demonstrations are also a top priority for organizers, as a portion of the proceeds will go toward funding a new youth coordinator position with the James Bay rugby club. The multi-layered event starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m. For more information, visit .

Opera in Nature

91原创 Opera’s Voices in Nature made a strong debut in 2021 as a pandemic-friendly outdoor event. The series returned June 1 and continues with events held on the grounds of Government House (June 9-10, 5 p.m.-7 p.m.), and Saxe Pointe (June 13-18, 4 p.m.-6 p.m.) over the next two weeks.

Pop-up performances and interactive programs featuring poets, community activists, and musicians are on tap during a two-hour window at each site. Admission is free. Organizers are suggesting visitors will spend approximately one hour at each performance. Information on transportation and parking can be found at .

Coast Guard tours

A public open house at the 91原创 Coast Guard base (25 Huron St.) in James Bay will kick-off 91原创 Coast Guard Day celebrations on Saturday.

The family-friendly celebration — under the banner of “Celebrate the past. Navigate the future.” — is marking the 60th anniversary of the 91原创 Coast Guard, which was created Jan. 26, 1962. Activities at the event includes ship tours and live rescue demonstrations. Attendees will learn about Search and Rescue, marine communications, and spill response, and will have the opportunity to meet officers, crew and program specialists.

The event gets underway at 10 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m.
