The Greater Victoria Public Library is inviting families and individuals of all ages to make the library part of their summer. From Baby Times to the B.C. Summer Reading Club and the Summer Challenge, there is something for everyone.

The B.C. Summer Reading Club is a free literacy program for children age 12 and under.

“We know parents worry about the ‘summer slide’, where learning can decline during the summer months. The B.C. Summer Reading Club is an excellent program because it helps children develop academically while sparking their love for stories and the library. Plus, there are some fantastic prizes to be won,” said Leah Pearse, public services librarian.

Children participating in the club read (or are read to, which also counts) for at least 20 minutes each day.

There are also online and in-person programs, including Comic Camps with Tahltan comic artist Cole Pauls, a session with Jeni Chen and a performance from The Myrtle Sisters.

The library’s Read and Write Reviews, for ages 10 to 18, and the Summer Challenge, for ages 13 and above, are also back, running until Sept. 5.

“Our popular Read and Write Reviews program encourages participants to read and share their thoughts by submitting a book review. Each review is an entry into the prize draw. This program is great because it empowers young readers to think critically and to express their opinions,” said Cheryl Landry, public services librarian.

Those 13 and older will enjoy The Summer Challenge, a self-paced, bingo-style challenge that encourages participants to step outside their comfort zone.

Other programs offered include Summer Baby Times and Indoor and Outdoor Family Storytimes, with a series of StoryWalks also planned. These interactive sessions are designed for the library’s youngest patrons and their families.
