Dance Victoria will close out January with several more days of programming under the Dance Days umbrella, including more than three dozen events offered free of charge.

Dance Victoria will close out January with several more days of programming under the Dance Days umbrella, including more than three dozen events offered free of charge.

The city-wide celebration, which wraps up Sunday, includes workshop performances and free adult dance classes at various studios. The stylistic offerings are wildly diverse, with classes catering to everything from ballet to ballroom to cabaret and hip-hop.

Classes are being offered by Raino Dance, the Maple Leaf School of Russian Ballet and Alive Mindbody, among others.

Additional ticketed events are taking place at venues including the Metro Theatre and Intrepid Theatre Club.

Topping the list is the anticipated Friday presentation of Man at the McPherson Playhouse, a production from Norway by choreographer Sølvi Edvardsen and performer Sudesh Adhana (see story). Edvardsen and Adhana will be on hand for several other events during Dance Days.

Rough Cuts, a series of in-progress dance presentations Friday and Saturday, will be followed by discussions with each artist. These are being offered as by-donation events at the Metro Studio Theatre and Intrepid Theatre Club, with subject matter ranging from the human form as it relates to modern dance to Indigenous mythology and creation stories.

Presenters’ Roundtable (Saturday, 11:15 a.m., McPherson Playhouse lobby) tackles the issue of contemporary dance in countries such as Norway and India, while Choreography Walk (Saturday and Sunday, meet at the Atrium) traverses through downtown with specifically curated choreography. The walks are full, but a waiting list is being taken for Sunday’s 2 p.m. walk.
