MUSIC

What: Sean Drabitt with Jose Loria Triay and Miles Black
Where: Hermann鈥檚 Jazz Club, 753 View St.
When: Friday, 8 p.m. (doors at 6)
Tickets: $20

Why: His performance Friday at Hermann鈥檚 Jazz Club will be the going-away gig for Victoria mainstay Sean Drabbit, who is returning next month to his winter home in Incheon, Korea. The Mt. Doug grad, who spends his summers here, is not leaving until Sept. 2, which gives Drabitt and his bandmates, pianist Miles Black and drummer Jose Loria Triay, one final night at the venerable View Street club in which to work their hard-bop magic. Drabitt might return for a concert around Christmas, following a tour of Ireland and England with trumpet player Damon Brown, so take the opportunity to enjoy some of what arguably the city鈥檚 best bassist has to offer.

THEATRE

What: I and You
Where: Studio Theatre, 9574 Bare Point Rd., Chemainus
When: Tonight through Aug. 31
Tickets: $30 from the Chemainus Theatre box office (250-246-9820) or chemainustheatre.ca

Why: While the bombastic Mamma Mia! continues its sold-out run in the Chemainus Theatre, an appealing two-hander at the 60-person Studio Theatre (in the Chemainus Theatre鈥檚 production building, behind the Best Western Hotel) is set to open across town. Written by San Francisco鈥檚 Lauren Gunderson, America鈥檚 most-produced living playwright, I and You follows two high schoolers as they navigate a friendship that often favours the real over the romantic. The play has been described as a 鈥渄elicate but droll play about teenagers exploring life and death,鈥 so don鈥檛 attend expecting light and fluffy.

MUSIC

What: Orville Peck with Woolworm
Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St.
When: Monday, 9 p.m.(doors at 8)
Tickets: $26.63 (including fees) from Lyle鈥檚 Place and ticketweb.ca

Why: There鈥檚 no definitive bio on this quixotic 91原创, whose psychedelic brand of outlaw country has drawn raves for its classic sheen. Outfitted in tassled suits, bolo ties and rhinestone shirts, with a dramatic, tassled Lone Ranger mask covering his face, there鈥檚 certainly an air of mystery about this country music throwback, who is rumoured to be from Toronto. Though it could perceived as a gimmick, the music on Pony, his debut for Sub Pop Records, stands on its own, no matter the identity of its source. 鈥淎ll I know is I鈥檓 Orville Peck,鈥 he told Billboard magazine recently. 鈥淎nd I鈥檓 a country star.鈥
