PINK MOUNTAINTOPS

Where: Upstairs Cabaret, 15 Bastion Square
When: Saturday, April 15, 6:30 p.m.
Tickets: $22.63 from

Why: Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean leads this gang of rock 'n’ roll rabblerousers, currently based in Los Angeles and touring in support of their new recording, Peacock Pools. The title of the band’s first album in eight years may or may not be a nod to Victoria pool hall Peacock Billiards — McBean has deep musical roots around these parts, having grown up in Sidney — which is how the quixotic singer-guitarist likes to operate. From punk and psych to freak folk, there’s no singular aesthetic, either — further adding to the intrigue. Pink Mountaintops is midway through a tour of B.C. that has taken the group to out-of-the way locales, winding down with performances tonight in Nanaimo at the Queen’s Hotel and Saturday in Victoria at Upstairs Cabaret. Don’t miss them.

AVIS RASMUSSEN

Where: Victoria Arts Council Gallery, 1800 Store St.
When: Saturday, April 15, 3 p.m.
Admission: Free

Why: It has been an impressive 60 years of professional art-making for Avis Rasmussen, whose work is the subject of a career retrospective that runs through May 28 at the Victoria Arts Council Gallery. A University of Victoria grad, who studied under Pat Martin Bates, Rasmussen’s work can be found everywhere from Government House in Victoria to the University of Prince Edward Island, in addition to private collections worldwide. An esteemed artist whose plaudits are very well earned.

VICTORIA COMEDY EXTRAVAGANZA

Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St.
When: Friday, April 14, 7 p.m.
Tickets: $38.11 (standing) or $48.41 (seated) from

Why: 91原创 comic Dino Archie has been staging Comedy Extravaganzas for the better part of 10 years as his way of showcasing burgeoning regional talent. The funnyman — originally from Fresno, California — is still repping his adopted hometown. He’s bringing an all-91原创 comedy show to the Capital Ballroom on Friday, with help from openers Chris Griffin and Hassan Phills.
