FOLK

What: Katrina Kadoski
Where:
When: Thursday, 7 p.m.
Admission: Free
Why: Sooke singer-songwriter Katrina Kadoski has been plying her trade for two decades. Her debut, Whirlpools, arrived in 1998, after which she embarked on a fruitful journey with Cougar Annie Tales, her one-person Fringe Festival hit about the life of the titular character. Kadoski is back to making music, albeit with an undercurrent of heartbreak. Her new album, After the Shipwreck, was written following the sudden death of her partner, Neil Weizel, in 2018. She will be joined for her album launch-livestream by members of The Edgedwellers, with whom she has been collaborating in recent years, emcee Wes Borg, and artist Nikki Haylett, who created the album art for After the Shipwreck.

OPERA/ART

What: Dark Sky/Bright Stars
Where:
When: Sunday, Dec. 20
Admission: Free
Why: The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s upcoming Family Sunday event, a collaboration with 91Ô´´ Opera Victoria, is timed to coincide with the looming Winter Solstice — a.k.a. the darkest day of the year. The focus for the union between visual arts and classical music will be on light, however — participants will use flashlights, blanket forts, paper and pencils to navigate the interactive offerings by the AGGV on its YouTube Channel. Dark Sky/Bright Stars begins Sunday and will feature current cast members of 91Ô´´ Opera, in addition to clips of past performances.

CLASSICAL MUSIC

What: A Baroque Christmas
Where: earlymusicsocietyoftheislands.ca
When: Sunday, 4 p.m.
Admission: Free
Why: Musicians playing baroque instruments and a program that includes the 17th century Huron Carol should put everyone who tunes in to A Baroque Christmas in the festive mood on Sunday. In keeping with the giving spirit of the season, the concert from the Early Music Society of the Islands will be provided free of charge. Baroque music from Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Canada (including works by Biber, Campra, Telemann, and Aufschnaiter) will be tackled by an esteemed assembly of performers that includes Jan van der Hooft (tenor), Christina Mahler (cello), Paul Luchkow (violin), Michael Jarvis (harpsichord) and Elyssa Lefurgy-Smith (violin).
